Southampton Boat Show 2008

Students from Redbridge Community School, Quilley School of Engineering, and Woodlands Community School attended the prestigious Southampton Boat Show in September 2008, and with over 600 exhibitor and 1000 boats on display the students had plenty to see.

One of the first places students visited was aboard the "Jeanie Johnston", an 18th century vessel which took people seeking survival and new hope to North America.  Once on board this tall ship, students explored both above and below decks to learn more about the voyages the ship took between Ireland and the United States; indeed she carried over 2500 people on 16 voyages, and amazingly never lost anyone.

Sunseeker, the luxury motor boat and yacht manufacturer, allowed the students to tour their many craft on display, and during this visit they met the well known actress, presenter, and singer Claire Sweeney, who happily gave up time to talk to the students from Redbridge School.  One of the crafts at the Sunseeker stand was the powerboat used in the latest James Bond film "Quantum of Solace".

The Royal Yachting Association provided some tuition in sailing, using their virtual sailing simulator - an activity for those who want to enjoy sailing without getting wet!  Teachers and students all tried to demonstarte their sailing skills on the stand by trying to steer a Laser class boat.

The day had an excellent conclusion when students were able to meet Olympic stars Tim Brabants and David Florence.  Tim won Olympic Gold in the K1 Kayak 1000 metre event and Bronze in the 500 metre challenge.  David became the first Scot to win a medal for Team GB at the Beijing Olympics, gaining a Silver in the men's singles slalom.
